May 2009
It was May 4th when we gathered for our Ring 79 meeting which was started
with the installation of officers for next year. Phil Messina did the
honors by installing as President Chris Sablich, Vice President Craig Kunkle,
Secretary/treasurer Dan Young and directors Dick Gusefski and Jon Harris.
Thanks to all for their service. Phil also presented the ring with a
certificate from the IBM recognizing our sixtieth anniversary celebration.
Members that attended MAWNY gave a review of the events. It was noted that
Nate Hickey and Dan Young performed at the annual Earth Fest in honor of
Earth Day in April. David Black has offered to help set up a magic show
as a fund raiser for the ring. A committee was formed to find a suitable partner
and start plans for the show in October.
It was a pleasure to have Greg Finch visit us from ring 216 in California. He
is here on business and sought out our ring. He brought a case of tricks and
performed a nice effect with a packet of one dollar bills that changes to
a pack of one hundred dollar bills. Next Nate Hickey did combination of a
triumph and Chicago opener effect where the selected card is the only odd
backed card. Then Phil Messina did a Howie Swartzman effect called
circulation which makes colored circles vanish from the spectators cards
and appear on the magicians card. Doug Welch was with us tonight and he
performed "by choice or by chance", a Jon Archer effect. It was very
well done and very deceptive. Dan Young produced a can of coke using
his "SuperPad" he recently purchased from Elmwood Magic.
Next was junior member Gerald Stinger doing a card trick in which a card
turns face up in the spread but it is not the chosen card yet he uses
it to find the chosen card. Then Gary Freed performed an effect called
Stickman 4 by Richard Sanders, now everyone wants to have this. We also
had Bob Hinman with us and he went back to the classics with the block
and cord, well done. The Gusefski's - Dick, Ben and Tim - used Dad's
power to magically transport a silk across the room with the help of
some bags they were holding. The show was ended with Richard Krushansky
do a nice job with the effect "what's mine is mine" - a packet trick
with a nice ending.
At the end Greg opened his case and many people were treated some
things we don't usually see. It is very helpful to have guests
from other areas so when you travel take your pack and find out where
the local ring is meeting.
